Assistant Professor of Ukrainian Culture

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Germany) is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor (full-time, tenure track) of Ukrainian Culture to begin on April 1, 2017.

The candidate is expected to cover the full range of the subject “Ukrainian Cultural Studies” in teaching and research. The main focus of the position is Ukrainian culture in a regional and global context. Therefore, experience in cultural studies dealing with other cultures in Eastern Europe (especially Russian and/or Polish culture) is desired. Formal requirements for application include an excellent PhD degree in Slavic Studies, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences or Eastern European History with a clear specialization in Ukrainian culture and experience in trans- and interdisciplinary research.

The candidate will be required to take part in teaching and training in all Slavic degree courses and the Faculty’s interdisciplinary degree courses, as well as in the annual International Summer School Greifswalder Ukrainicum. Furthermore, he/she is also expected to establish an interdisciplinary research center dealing with the Ukraine at Greifswald University. Previous experience in academic self-government and in raising of external funding as well as international academic experience are explicitly desired. The candidate must be prepared to teach courses in German and English.

The necessary qualifications are defined in § 62 Abs. 1 of the State Higher Education Law of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Landeshochschulgesetz Mecklenburg-Vorpommern LHG M-V). They include a university degree, a PhD degree and teaching experience.

In accordance with § 62 Abs. 2 LHG M-V, the position is first offered for the duration of three years. Pending a positive evaluation, the position may be extended by another three years. After that, the position holder may be assigned the status of a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis) with unlimited tenure; alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee.
