Lecturer in Russian

University of Chicago - Chicago, IL

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago invites applications for a full-time, one- to three-year renewable appointment as Lecturer beginning July 1, 2016.

The primary duties include teaching a minimum of six courses per year, primarily in first and second year Russian. A background in current pedagogical theory and second-language acquisition is required.

The candidate may be asked to assume the administrative position of Departmental Language Coordinator. This position is supplementary to a regular appointment as Lecturer and independent of it; it is for a concurrent term, renewable, and carries an additional salary supplement. The duties of Language Coordinator include developing, overseeing and coordinating the Department’s language program, which currently offers Russian, Czech, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, and Polish. In addition, the Coordinator will be closely involved in hiring, training, and supervising other instructors.

If needed, the Language Coordinator should be able to teach a one-quarter course on the pedagogy of Slavic languages in order to prepare graduate students to teach in the department.

The position is open to candidates who will have completed an advanced degree (at least MA, preferably PhD) by June 30, 2016, have native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English, and have experience in an American university setting. Knowledge of one or more other Slavic languages, especially Czech, would be advantageous but is not required.
