THE AATSEEL NEWSLETTER is published four times a year (February, April, October and December).
The following information is provided for persons responsible for placing advertisements and those responsible for producing advertisements in the AATSEEL Newsletter. Any questions that are not answered below or
any information needing further elucidation should be discussed with the
Editor: Leaver@aol.com.
Deadlines:
Deadlines for ads are 6 weeks before the first day of the month in which the issue running the ad will appear. In other words: August 15 for the October issue; October 15 for the December issue; December 15 for the February issue; and February 15 for the April issue.
Sizes:
Specific sizes for these formats are as follows:
Full Page ad: 7 5/8" wide x 9 3/8" high
Half Page vertical ad: 3 5/8" wide x 9 3/8" high
Half Page horizontal ad: 7 5/8" wide x 4 5/8" high
Quarter Page ad: 3 5/8" wide x 4 5/8" high
Other sizes can sometimes be accommodated. These need to be discussed on an individual basis with the Editor and/or Executive Director.
Costs:
The costs of advertising, as of July 2006, are given below. These costs are for single insertions. Multiple inserts are given a 10% discount if multiple insertions are requested when the ad is first placed.
$200 for a full page
$150 for a half page
$90 for a quarter page
$30 per column inch (approximately six lines)
Cost for ad composition is $75.
The AATSEEL Newsletter staff will compose your advertisement for you based on your text, specifications (if any), and graphics (provided by you or suggested by the staff).
*Costs for changes to advertisements (these can be faxed, handwritten, or sent by e-note) are $50. If advertisers wish to have the AATSEEL Newsletter staff correct errors in text, graphics, or composition that were created by the advertiser, the $50 charge will apply. Similarly, if an advertiser wishes to use an advertisement from a previous issue and change dates and other information within the ad, there will be a $50 correction fee.
*Note: Extensive changes to PDF files are not possible and minor changes, such as date changes may or may not be possible. Usually it is best for the advertiser to make those changes in the original program file that the ad was created in and then generate a new PDF to send to us. TIFF and JPEG formats can not be easily edited and would need to
be re-submitted by the advertiser. Of course ads that we have created for an advertiser can be edited. These costs are subject to change without notice, based on the escalating costs of the AATSEEL Newsletter production. Changes in prices will be announced in the AATSEEL Newsletter and updated as soon as possible in the guidelines.
Full scholarship study tours and stateside study programs, meetings, job information, new classroom materials, and similar announcements are published free of charge. Questions on advertising fees and determination of whether an announcement is an advertisement should be addressed to the Executive Director.
Insertions and Billing:
Ads should be submitted to the Editor at:
Betty Lou Leaver - Leaver@aol.com.
Questions regarding composition, technical matters, and the like should be sent to:
Betty Lou Leaver -Leaver@aol.com.
When making the original insertion, please let the Editor know how many issues the ad should be carried in. A multiple-insertion discount is applicable only to insertion orders placed and billed at one time.
Billing is handled by the Executive Director:
Elizabeth Durst, Ph.D. - aatseel@usc.edu.
Billing takes place after the AATSEEL Newsletter has appeared.
Advertisement Preparation:
The AATSEEL Newsletter is prepared totally electronically. There is no option for paste-up, i.e., no mechanism for sending paper ads for the printer to insert (and therefore, there is no need and no way to use camera-ready copy). The AATSEEL Newsletter is published as a PDF file and distributed to subscribers via the AATSEEL website. The only ads that the AATSEEL Newsletter will scan are those that have been produced as original art work by hand (i.e. by an illustrator).
There are two options for preparation of ads for the AATSEEL Newsletter. One is to compose the ad yourself. The other is to let the AATSEEL Newsletter compose your ad (for which there is an additional charge, the amount depending on the complexity of the ad).
Suggestions for Composing the Ad Yourself:
The preferred format for all advertisements is Adobe Acrobat PDF. The PDF should be produced using the preset “print” quality setting. This will ensure the proper settings for graphics and insure the fonts are embedded. For those that have not invested in Adobe Acrobat you can go to this Adobe web page to make a PDF online:
https://createpdf.adobe.com/?v=AHP
The only other ad formats we will accept for ads with graphics are flattened TIFF or JPEG files that are sized to the proper advertisement size at a resolution of 300 dpi. These files are not editable by the AATSEEL Newsletter staff, so corrections will have to be made by the advertiser and resubmitted to us.
Don't try to be fancy. Use resident, cross-platform fonts. There are many nice fonts that are resident, and most professional layout specialists prefer to use these. If a font is not true-type or postscript, or if it cannot be embedded it because it is purloined, the AATSEEL Newsletter cannot accommodate it. Eventually, the AATSEEL Newsletter is turned into a large PDF file, and all fonts must be embeddable, including those in the ads.
Advertisements without graphics may be sent as word processor files in the RTF format. Word processor files with graphics, however, do not import, nor do word processing programs generally produce graphics of AATSEEL Newsletter quality.
Send us by e-mail your advertisement with the billing information and which issues you wish it to be run in. Remember you get a 10% discount for multiple runs when you let us know at the time you place the ad.
Having the AATSEEL NEWSLETTER Compose the Ad:
If you prefer, the AATSEEL Newsletter staff can prepare the ad for you. If you want to exercise this option, send the information, along with a description or drawing of the ad. Logos and graphics should be sent as EPS, PDF or high resolution TIFF or JPEG files.
Photographs can be sent by mail to:
