Abstract

Focus on Standards: Russian Art and Music

The new standards for Russian K-12 invite teachers to integrate culture and communication in the context of connecting learning with other disciplines. As reflected in the Russian-specific standards document, a third- or fourth-year secondary school Russian class that includes a number of heritage learners can develop language skills in connection with a unit on either Russian music or art. Teacher-prepared materials guide the students with a matrix for oral presentations, a rubric for assessment, and guidelines for the project. When the project is carried out in a distance learning environment, the unique technology available there also affects the way the unit progresses. Handouts for teachers will include copies of the guidelines, rubric, and matrix.
