Pre-Conference LEARN Workshop
This year a
pre-conference workshop is being offered on Wednesday, January 31st and Thursday, February 1st. Please see the

Keynote Address
The Keynote Address in DC, "'A sudden twinge of gloom and loathing.’ Hatred as
the Modern Affect: From Dostoevsky To Witkiewicz” will be given by Michał Paweł Markowski (University of Illinois at Chicago) on Saturday morning, February 3rd at 11:00am.

Friday, February 2, 12:00-1:30pm: Translation Workshop with Alexandra Petrova, Ainsley Morse (UC-Riverside), and Maria Khotimsky (MIT), Alexandra Petrova is a Russian-language poet and prose writer based in Rome. This workshop will focus on excerpts from her recent novel about migration(s),

The Rehearsals, by Vladimir Sharov: Reading and Launch Party
A reading and launch party to mark the publication of Vladimir Sharov’s novel
Repetitsii (written 1986-88) in English translation by Oliver Ready (Dedalus Books, 2018). A stunning reflection on art, religion, history and national identity, The Rehearsals is the seminal work in the unique oeuvre of Vladimir Sharov, Russian Booker Prize winner (2014) and author of Before & During, which received the Read Russia Prize in Ready’s translation in 2015.
Both author and translator will read at this event, which will be chaired by Mark Lipovetsky. The event coincides with a special panel devoted to Vladimir Sharov’s fiction at this year’s conference at 3:15pm on Saturday. Books will be for sale (cash only) at a 25% discount for $15.

Strategies for Teaching Literature, Culture, and Film in Translation
Friday, February 2nd, 10:15am-12:00pm: Roundtable speakers will briefly share frameworks teachers can use with different content to teach literature, culture, and film in translation. There will be time for audience participants to share briefly the strategies and activities they use to teach literature, culture, and film in translation.
