Assistant Professor Position in Comparative Literature (Central Asia and Eurasia)

The Department of Languages, Linguistics and Literatures (LLL) of the School of Sciences and Humanities (SSH) at Nazarbayev University is considering applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The LLL Department is seeking to hire a specialist in the literature of Central Asia. The ideal candidate would have a strong research specialization in one of the literary traditions of Central Asia, including but not limited to Turkic or Persian language literatures.

A strong candidate would have the ability to teach classes in media studies, cultural studies, or comparative literature at both the introductory and advanced level. This faculty member is also expected to contribute to the MA program in Eurasian Studies, where MA students have in previous years conducted research on contemporary and Soviet era Kazakhstani literary and artistic production. The successful candidate will have demonstrated commitment to program-building and student mentoring and will be able to complement our department’s diverse strengths, ranging from comparative literature to cultural studies, from folkloristic to creative writing and foreign language learning.

We seek a candidate with an exemplary and ongoing record of research, demonstrated excellence in teaching, commitment to active involvement in the life of the Department and the School, and a capacity to advise undergraduate and graduate students in the wide thematic area of literature, and to mentor senior undergraduates in application to graduate programs.

This is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal, it carries a 2/2 teaching load.

The LLL Department currently has eleven full-time and 5 part-time faculty representing a variety of disciplines in the domain of languages, linguistics and comparative literature. The World Languages, Literature, and Culture (WLLC) is one of the fastest growing major programs at SSH, NU. The LLL Department’s program is also integrated into the graduate program in Eurasian Studies, an interdisciplinary MA and PhD program.
