AATSEEL’s Virtual Open Houses for High School Students of Russian

Building Pathways. Building Community

AATSEEL is launching an innovative new program of Virtual Open Houses for High School Students of Russian. These events aim to help students, especially students from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds, find exciting and well-supported pathways through college and beyond. By improving access to information and facilitating connections, we aim to improve secondary to post-secondary articulation for all students. Our pilot program will take place in Spring 2024.

These events offer a unique and valuable opportunity for high school students to meet with the professors with whom they would study in college. In this informal atmosphere, students and professors can get to know one another as people, and start to envision how Russian/East European Studies could fit into each student’s future course of study based on their individual needs and interests.

We have also collected information from each program about Russian/East European major/minor opportunities, double major pairings, special scholarships for Russian/East European studies, study abroad opportunities and funding, and more. We invite students and their parents/guardians to come learn where, why, and how to continue studying Russian or other Slavic/East European/Eurasian languages in college and beyond.

FORMAT

Our Open Houses will take place as part of a larger, asynchronous virtual College Fair, open April 15th to June 30th. During that time, each participating program or department will have a virtual exhibit booth, where videos, brochures, handouts, etc. can be uploaded for students. Students may visit virtual booths at any time during the six weeks that the Fair is open. In addition to this asynchronous material, we have four Live Open House dates: April 18, April 23, May 2, and May 7. On these dates, featured schools will have faculty online, ready to meet LIVE with students by video and/or messaging. For a list of featured schools by date, click here.

Please note: Since this is our pilot season, we will not be charging for the events. Next year, however, we will charge a small fee for participating colleges to cover the cost of the virtual booth.
